Eiker Park Historical Marker Located in Big Springs on the west side of town. The first and largest robbery of a Union Pacific train happened near Big Springs in 1877. Texas outlaw Sam Bass and five companions made off with $60,000 in gold and currency. Some say that part of the loot, a stash of 20 gold pieces is still buried in the area. Less than a year after the robbery, Texas Rangers killed Bass on his 27th birthday. His epitaph reads, "A brave man reposes in death here. Why was he not true?". The historical marker tells the story of the famous robbery. Four Corner Marker which marks the spot of Deuel, Keith, Perkins and Sedgwick Colorado is located on Rd 211 and Rd 2 South of Big Springs Lincoln Highway - Scenic & Historic Byway Highway 30 - Kerk's Barbershop downtown has a Lincoln Highway display, and the old route is marked through town with metal signs. B-24J Bomber Crash Historical Marker / Monument Located: Take the road on the south side of 1-80, travel about 3 miles south. This monument is dedicated to the Service men who were killed June 7, 1944, on a flight from the Lincoln Air Base. The site is a marked grave site of the 10 airmen whose plane caught fire and exloded. Website | Download Map Pony Express 9-Mile Station Marker (Chappell) Location: Near the northwest quadrant of the I-80 interchange. Mrs. A.C. Cabela of Chappell is cited as being a granddaughter of a Pony Express rider, Michael Casey, who rode through this area from Julesburg to Mud Springs in about 1960. LAKES, FISHING, and CAMPING Chappell Lake - Fishing & Short-term Camping Located just north of 1-80 and offers largemouth bass, catfish, perch, walleye and bluegill. ART GALLERIES & MUSEUMS Bergstrom Rock and Gem Collection Mastodon bones and teeth are on display, along with several other fossils found in the Chappell area. A collection of Rembrandt reproductions, rare paintings and unusual oriental art. Orianna Ward Chappell, wife of the railroad executive for whom the town was names in 1884, donated many of the items. Phone: 308.874.2626 Sudman-Neumann Heritage House Home as it was in a more genteel time, this 1911 house has been restored to its original condition, complete with period furniture. Also featured is a display of original amenities from the Washington office of Nebraska's longest-serving Representative, Congresswoman Virginia Smith. During the holiday season individual rooms are decorated and open for viewing.
